What side effects should one expect with chemotherapy for stage-4 colon cancer?

My loved one has stage-4 colon cancer. They removed 18" of his colon, but it has spread to the liver and throughout his abdomen. Please help me to know what to expect. He starts chemo tomorrow. Any knowledge would be most appreciated.

that depends on the chemo regiment that he’s put on, but I’ll agree with fatigue and nausea being the most common side effects.

Does anyone know anything I can do for Colon Cancer Fundraising?

My dad was diagnosed a couple of months ago with Stage 4 colon cancer. I have been reading everything I can on it, but one of the things this oh-so-preventable-cancer is missing is the type of fundraising I only seem to find for breast cancer. I want to do everything I can to do my part to raise awareness and raise money if I can. Please let me know if you know how to do so.
Anything local to the PA, NJ, DE, MD aread would be even better!

Your desire to help with this important health issue is wonderful. You may want to start by contacting your local chapter of the American Cancer Society (ACS). You should find them in the phone book.

The ACS may have fund-raising programs you can assist with. You may also be able to work with them to start a special program specifically for colon cancer if they do not already have one.

There are plenty of ways to raise funds for cancer awareness. Here are a few ideas:

1) a walk for colon cancer (walkers get friends and family to ‘sponsor’ their walk with a donation for each mile the person walks)
2) a raffle/drawing (donated artwork, cruise or vacation tickets, a 50/50 drawing, etc.)
3) sell tee-shirts, mugs, hats, etc. with a logo about supporting colon cancer awareness
4) a community auction – get local people and businesses to donate items to the auction
5) sell ribbons, pins, etc. to show support for colon cancer awareness.

Best wishes and good luck.

how many fruits per day i should eat to prevent colon cancer or polyps?

i dont feed much on veggies cos i dont have time to cook. so i try to substitute it with fruits. how much fruits i need per day to prevent the horrible death of having colon cancer which leads bowel interuption and consequently vomitting fecal matter?

i eat 2 bananas per day but im not sure it has enough fibre in it. now i added 1 piece of apple to my daily diet. is that enough?

I have been researching diet for cancer patients (see more on www.after-cancer.com) and you need to eat more fruit and veg.

Doctors recommend AT LEAST five portions a day – veg. are better, but fruit is good. Why not snack on carrots sticks, cucumber, cherry tomatoes etc?

But no diet can prevent cancer – all it can do is make you healthier so that if cancer comes, you are better able to recover. There is a lot of research that says that fruit and veg might prevent colon cancer, but so far no-one has come up with a definitive statement.

What kind of genetic disorder is colon cancer?

I have a research paper for biology and one of the questions that need to be answered is what type of genetic disorder is your disease. The disease I got assigned is colon cancer, and i can’t find what kind of genetic disorder it is. Would someone please inform me

Hi Ray. Below are a few links to scientific papers on heritable (genetic) types of colon cancer. They should give you a good start on your research.

Could someone help me regarding dietary restrictions after colon cancer operation?

My husband was operated on for colon cancer approximately six (6) months ago, is doing fine, but foods that were OK are now giving him diarrhea. Any suggestions regarding food, possible books to buy, etc? My sincere thanks.

Linda, you should be calling his DR. A dietitian should be telling him what kinds of foods to eat. There are foods that go through the colon that are not good for him after surgery. I’m surprised a dietitian didn’t speak to him before he left the hospital. Please, call his DR and tell him what’s going on. Good luck to your husband. I wish him the best.

How long does someone in stage 4 colon cancer have to live?

My dad was just diagnosed with stage 4 colon cancer. I’ve done some research and read a few answers here on yahoo. Everyone is saying that this is "a death sentence". I was wondering if anyone knows how long the average life expectancy is of someone with stage four colon cancer…it has spread to the liver and lungs as well.

I dont like putting a date on these kinds of situations, but unfortunately this type of Cancer can be particularly savage and can be quite swift, in as far as some as the cases i have seen and been involved with, (i am a community care worker) Some i have been involved with, can hold on for 3 or 4 years if they are quite healthy, if not they can go as quickly as 6 months from diagnosis…….I apologize for being the bearer of bad news, but the best you can do for your dad is to be there for him, allow him that time to greive, the greiving process is goind to take him through some pretty strong emotions, so you are really going to need to be there for him during this stage, even if you are dealing with your own issues in regards to grief….. and to be close to all of his family, hold his hand when he wants to, and just let him know you love him……other than that i can offer some website that will also give you some pointers as to how to deal with this issue.

They are…….Paliative care explained…involves grief processes and how to deal with death…..

What is going to happen as my Grandma dies from colon cancer?

A few years ago my Grandma was diagnosed with colon cancer and recently she was giving 2-3 months left to live. I would really like to know what is going to happen so I can be a prepaired as possible. I know that every person is different but even a general idea would help. Thankyou!
PLEASE no stupid, hurtful, making fun of the situation comments
Sorry, I wasn’t very clear. I meant to ask what is going to happen with Grandma. For instance will she lose her appetite or will her skin start to yellow-ish like it did during chemo?

In my case (my Mom died of colon cancer) my Mom’s cancer spread from the colon to the liver. Once the cancer is in the system and invading other organs the patient starts to decline, lose their appetite, lose interest in daily events and they start to be within themselves. They may not want to talk much, but they can hear everything. The hospice told me that this was their way to prepare for the next journey.

If your Grandma is in pain they will give her Morphine (usually) and that will make her very sleepy and "out of it".

It’s a hard thing to watch and I am sorry that you will have to go through this. Usually after they have been given a time frame, they go sooner than later.

Say everything you need to say to her now, don’t let her leave without saying that you loved her.

Wish you well.

Can you have colon cancer and have no other symptoms except pain?

Is it possible to have colon cancer, and yet only have one symptom, which is abdominal discomfort, which is on and off and can be absent for months and then come back, at age 21- and again, no other symptoms except the on and off discomfort pain, which usually is only there in the morning the days it does appear?

It is very possible to have colon cancer with no symptoms at all.
Abdominal pain is not an early warning symptom for colon cancer. Intermittent abdominal pain in a 21 year old is far more likely to be caused by a benign disorder rather than a malignancy of the colon or a cancer of any other kind in the abdomen.

It would be unlikely for any cancer caused pain to get better or go away for months and then come back off and on with no treatment. If a cancer is causing pain, it is stretching or pressing on a pain sensitive area. If a cancer is untreated, the pain it causes is more constant and progressive rather than intermittent.

Why is the incidence of Colon Cancer higher in wealthy nations than in developing nations?

I need some help answering the following question. Any help would be greatly appreciated:

1. What conclusion might you draw from the fact that in wealthy nations the incidence of colon cancer is higher than in developing nations? Justify your answer.

-thanks

Individuals in wealthy nations tend to consume richer food and more processed food — and less fibre.
