I am freaking out- bipolar and I just found out my Dad has cancer?
I feel like i’m going to freak out and end up in the psych ward. I found out today that he has prostate cancer. The prognosis is unknown at this point. Also, one of my kids is coming down with a virus so we will not be able to spend Thanksgiving with my family which upsets me even more because I can’t be with my Dad. I don’t know what to do. I went on a shopping spree today because I was upset. Then when my husband was driving I freaked out and made him stop the car so I could get out and walk home. I am totally losing it and I can see this turning into a disaster. I tried to commit suicide and almost died 2 months ago. I’m afraid of myself. Help….
I take 600mg Seroquel, 450 mg Lithium, 4 mg Klonopin and 150 Wellbutrin a day
Hi. I have bipolar, too.
First, most all prostrate cancer is treatable. Even in the cases were it is not, it is a very slow cancer and people usually live years – and that’s the worse case scenario.
You sound like you are both hypomanic and depressed at the same time. True? It’s a mixed state. In any case, call your doctor tomorrow morning. There are meds (antipsychotics in particular) that can knock that down pretty fast.
If you feel like you are a threat to yourself or others, have your husband drive you to the ER. If it’s not that bad, call your doc first thing tomorrow morning.
Go see your Dr ASAP.

You need the emergency room now, please they can help you calm down. I am bipolar and certainly understand what the crisis that you are having will do. But this is to soon after a sucide attempt and you have not healed enough to help yourself. You are in an emergency. Please get help. Every city has a crisis hotline center, pick up the phone and ask for the number of the closet one to you. They are staffed with professionals you can talk to and get you help. Please do one of these things right now. People love you, your children need you do this for them. Please know that Prostate Cancer is very curable and men rarely die of this disease anymore.

Check with your local hospital er and see if they have some one you can talk to. Or check with your local suicide hot line. If you can, make other arrangements to go visit with your father as soon as possible. I understand not being able to be with family at the holidays, as i have to make time on my days off from work or schedule time off to go.

You are capable of handling this. You have the capacity to work through this crisis and manage these emotions. You are a responsible adult and know how to conduct yourself accordingly. Best Wishes.

You should go to Emergency at your local hospital. It sounds like you are having a hard time managing your symptoms. Stress is something that can trigger a manic episode, I’ve been there, done that. Are you on a mood stabilizer? I am also bipolar, and taking Seroquel. It does help with the mania side of things. If you are not on medication, you should talk to your doctor about that. It can help you deal with your dad’s illness. If you have to, call 911. Take care.
